Definitely not a tenor guitar or a uke. They have different scale lengths and are tuned completely differently. Sure an electric four string doesn't sound exactly like an 8 string...but it sounds pretty cool with the right person playing it. Check out U. Srinivas. He tunes it to Indian tuning but he shreds electric mando....four and five string.Michael Kang of String Cheese is ok too....although I'm not so into the band.

I play mando and I can tell you it's pretty fund to just shred on a 4 or 5 string once in a while...Even add a few effects. It's nice to feel like a guitar player once in a while and be able to change the tone, add distortion, etc. without having to compensate for the 8 strings.
